Spotlight on a Naturalista: Noe, Hair Goddess
How long have you worn your natural hair?
I have actually been natural most of my life. I was relaxed for two years during elementary school and from the eighth grade until I finished undergrad. I had my last relaxer seven years ago this summer.
What was your inspiration to go natural?
When I found out I was pregnant, I decided to make a few lifestyle changes. My choice to stop relaxing and to go natural was one of them.
Did you have any concerns about making the transition?
I wavered back and forth regarding the length of my hair–to cut or not to cut. After two months, I gave in and chopped off the relaxed ends and got braids. After I took out the braids out, I was looking for alternative styles that would not damage the health of my hair and that were easy to replicate.
What is the best compliment you have received about your hair?
The best compliment was from my son’s former preschool director. She said she was jealous because I could do so many styles with my hair while she could really only wear hers one way. Random people will also occasionally stop me and say how much they like my hair which is a nice little boost in my day.
What is your favorite style to wear?
I love my ponytail & ponypuff, but when it’s warm out I usually wear a wash-n-go. I’m big on low-maintenance styles since I’m always on the go.
What advice would you give to others who are thinking about transitioning to natural hair?
The best advice I could give to anyone transitioning is to be patient. Transitioning can be extremely frustrating. We often tend to see images of other naturals and think that’s what our hair is supposed to look like. Everyone is different and that applies to our hair as well. Take the time to get to know your natural hair and what works for you. There are many valuable resources to help educate new naturals. Take advantage!!

Right now I am in the process of trying the two stranded twists outs with my natural coiff..This is a first time experience for me since I primarily wear press n’ curl styles and wigs, so hopefully it will turn out for the best.

Hi Veronica! Congratulations on your transition. It can be challenging, so I understand your frustration…but don’t give up. I will have a post up this week about tips for transitioning, which will also include a list of resources.
The journey will be worth it when you have a head full of beautiful, all natural, hair.
