In my journey to have perfect eyebrows, I found the ideal ancient beauty technique.

And So It Begins…

I remember my first time like it was yesterday. I had just my hair done at the salon, and the stylist insisted that she “trim” my eyebrows. Then–GASP!–she pulled out a single edge razor and headed straight for my forehead. I closed my eyes and hoped that God would steady her hand–and spare my vision! Luckily, as you can see, I have lived to recount this chilling experience.

Let’s Do It Again

After that scare, I decided to try waxing. I heard that waxing was quick, and I appreciated the fact that this process did not involve any sharp tools. Seated comfortably in the chair, I closed my eyes and took the plunge. 3..2..1..Ouch! Did this lady just pull off all of my eyebrow hairs? Yes, this procedure was quick, but so is a stab wound. As I nursed the pain on my throbbing forehead, I knew there had to be a better way.

The Holy Grail

Ladies and gentlemen, I present…eyebrow threading! This natural beauty technique originated in Persia and India and has always been a popular in the Middle East for hair removal. What is threading? The person wraps a fine thread around the hairs and removes them by gently moving their hand. It’s a rather fascinating process, actually.

In the spirit of full disclosure, you may feel a little tingle while getting your brows threaded, but it pales in comparison to the torture of waxing. I would suggest applying aloe (ahhh…) to your brow area right after threading.

Benefits of Threading

  • It lasts a long time. You only have to get it done every 6 to 8 weeks, depending on your growth.
  • The top layers of the skin are not removed, unlike waxing.
  • The results are precise.
  • There is minimal to no risk of ingrown hairs.
  • No chemicals–always a plus for the natural beauty!

Unless you have been trained in this technique, I would advise that you leave it to the professionals. You can find of listing of spas and salons that offer threading here:

  2. I have to admit that I love the results from threading. But it makes me cry. Not a boo hooin, but tears well up in my eyes from the pain.

  3. @ NewRibena: I didn’t even think about the hygiene aspect. Great point!

@ Gigi: Awww…be sure to apply witch hazel or aloe to help after threading. Also, I read (and can attest) that certain times of the month, you body is more sensitive to pain than others. This may help to make the process more tolerable for you.

  4. I love the results even though it hurts – no more than waxing does though. The aloe def helps. I didn’t think about the hygiene part either. Good point.
