In an earlier post, I advised to you to take inventory of your lotions and creams to check the ingredients. You did throw out that vat of vaseline, didn’t you? Well, as promised, here is a list of natural alternatives that you can use.  These oils have been used by cultures for generations to maintain healthy, beautiful skin.

Sesame:

“Miss Lycia, are you saying that I can marinate my greens and moisturize my skin with the same product?”

Yes you can!  :-)

Sesame oil is an excellent moisturizer for the skin, as it is replete with essential fatty acids. These fatty acids are integral to healthy cell membranes, which allow your skin to expel waste and retain moisture.

Olive:  This is the most commonly utilized oil for hair and skin care products.  Olive oil is a natural humectant and skin conditioner. As noted in a previous post, it is an ideal part of a nightly moisturizing regimen.

Coconut: Women in tropical climates can attest to the benefits of coconut oil as a superb moisturizer, because of its emollient properties.  With its mild, light texture, it is perfect for those with dry or sensitive  skin. (P.S. Many men love this scent!)

Castor: Yes, this is the same castor oil your Grandmother used to give you as a tonic. Used since ancient biblical times for medicinal and topical use, it is also referred to as “Palma Christi,”  or “Palm of Christ.”  Castor oil actually attracts and retains moisture to the skin.

Jojoba: I am including jojoba oil in this category as an honorable mention, because it is actually a liquid wax with the properties of the oils mentioned above. Jojoba is one of the best oils for moisturizing, because it most closely resembles the natural sebum that is produced by our skin.  A natural antioxidant, jojoba oil is good for all skin types.

One thing to note, when choosing oils, look for the ones that are cold pressed, expeller processed, or extra virgin. Commercially processed oils have been stripped of their essential nutrients.  Also, check the label to ensure your oils have no fragrances or other additives.

In future posts, I will share how to add essential oils and other gifts from nature to make your own custom blends.

Have you used any of these oils on your skin? How have they worked for you?
