Lean on Me: The Power of a Support System
A friend accepts us as we are yet helps us to be what we should. ~Author Unknown
What changes have you decided to make in your life? Eat healthier? Lose weight? Exercise? Whatever you have decided to do, the key to your success is having a solid support system. Whether its a family member, friend, or partner, it helps to have someone who can encourage you along the way.
My Story
I used to be a firm meat and potatoes girl, but through the years, I have evolved to eating a plant-based diet, as well as making other changes towards a healthier life. People always commend me on my “willpower” and “self-control”. I readily admit that my family members and circle of friends have been vital along my journey. If someone had given me a box of Popeye’s Chicken and Biscuits while I was preparing a spinach salad, I certainly could have faltered. From my mother giving me gift certificates to Whole Foods or my father being open to trying new restaurants (He likes Japanese too!), I owe my health in part to my extended circle.
This goes beyond just food. When I transitioned to natural hair, all of my friends were extremely supportive. They rallied for me when I was learning how to style my hair, and since then, some of them have grown their hair out naturally too!
We live in a world of temptations. Commercials and billboards will tempt you with the latest super triple 1 pound cheeseburger. Co-workers and strangers will question your lifestyle choices. Having the support of one person (or a circle) is and will be invaluable along your journey. I encourage you to find that person (or group) in your life who you can count on for support, or even to gently nudge you in the right direction. When you feel like making a midnight run to Krispy Kreme or you’re frustrated with your progress, it helps to have someone you can call (or text or twitter) before you fall off the wagon.
Of course, you can always come here too. I am available for questions, tips and a (virtual) hug.
Do you have someone who has supported you through your lifestyle changes?

I commend you on your lifestyle changes. I have succesfully transitioned to natural hair but the nutrition part has been so much more difficult. First problem, I eat about 3 vegetables period (and one of those is truly a grain), second problem is that I have Celiac disease (cannot tolerate gluten or wheat products). I’m pretty much off of dairy since I have extreme milk and egg sensitivities and I no longer eat red meat. I really try hard but I get bored quickly with my limited choices. Few understand why I’m such a “picky” eater and eating out is almost unbearable. I’m still giving it my best shot and the few changes I’ve made enable me to feel much healthier than I have in a long time.

Hi NewRibena, thanks for the comment. I do understand where you are coming from. When I was younger, I only ate a few vegetables (begrudgingly). What helped me was to experiment with various ethnic cuisines and prepare foods in different ways. (For instance, I don’t like cooked spinach, but love it in a salad.)
Congrats to you for making the decision to eat healthy. I’m so glad that you are feeling better already. I will have more recipes on the site that hopefully you will enjoy. Feel free to e-mail me at misslycia@alldaynatural.com anytime if you have questions or for support along your journey.
